Tips to Perfect Your Poker Face

Some people think that poker is all about luck, but there is more to poker than just throwing some money into the center of the table and hoping that the dealer calls you as winner. It takes skill and practice to really become a master at poker. You will have to learn how to tempt your opponents to bet more money and you will have to learn to not let your face betray you.
If you have ever watched poker players on television, you may have noticed that some wear hats or sunglasses or pull the hood of their jackets up around their face. This is a good tactic for those that are afraid they may be given away by the slight movement in their facial muscles. The truth, however, is that if you can learn to keep a straight poker face without all those accessories, you will be considered a better poker player.
Keeping a poker face is not the easiest thing to learn, but it's definitely not the hardest, either. There are many different techniques you can try to maintain a straight face, so this is something you will have to learn to do yourself.
Keep in mind that the more you think about your cards, the easier your face will be to read. You will want to have a blank face at all times, so try not to actually think about your hand until it's your turn. Instead of trying to figure out your next move, try evaluating your opponent's facial expressions or body movements, like nervous ticks. This will give you a bit of insight as to what the other players' hands may look like.
Another tactic you may want to try, and this works to make the players bet more, is act the opposite of what you feel. If you have a really dismal looking hand, put on your biggest smile and act like you have a royal straight flush. This will make the other players consider folding, which will up your chances of winning (by default). Or, if your hand is really good, look disappointed, like you know you are not going to win. This will give the other players a false sense of security because they will think they got you beat and not put so much effort into trying to better their own hand.
If they catch on to your bluff, do the opposite. If you have a good hand, put on a big smile and if you have a bad hand, look saddened. That way you will throw them off even more and they won't be able to tell if your emotions are real or not. If you are able to perfect your poker face and learn how to mislead your opponents, you are on the right track to becoming a great poker player.
